Mc Roberts Coal Memorial Wall

Mc Roberts Remembers The Miners

Written by Joanna Adams Sergent

Nestled in a small area, Mc Roberts, Kentucky has a Memorial wall that is often overlooked.   There is a high wall that was made for the coal mine train tracks to keep the mountain from sliding off.  The concrete retaining wall has been transformed into something that is of remembrance.

Mc Roberts, Kentucky has dedicated the wall to the Miners of Consolidated Coal Mine Number 214 in what is called 15 Hollow.  The Wall was dedicated by the Mountain Outreach Inc. whose founders are:  Vernon Hall and Jimmy Hall who are the sons of Ora Hall.   The wall is located on KY Route 343 in front of the building that is the Mc Roberts Adult Day Health Care.

I was born in Florida and grew up in Burdine, Kentucky.  I have been married to David W. Sergent since May 4, 2013.  I have two children and four grandchildren from a previous marriage.   I currently live in Tennessee but my hope is to one day come back home to live in the beautiful mountains once more.

Thanks so much for this special effort remembering and honoring our family members. I’m proud to be a coal miner’s daughter. His sacrifice to make sure that we were fed and clothed means so much now that I’m mature enough to realize it. Grateful, Betty McFall
